Coyote captured on film near Umstead Park

A Raleigh Eco News reader who lives near Umstead State Park shot this backyard photo a couple of months ago using a motion-triggered trail camera. The person, who shall remain unidentified in order to deter coyote- or camera-hunting trespassers, reports:
The coyote appears a bit larger than it really is because the camera is only two feet off the ground, however this one is obviously well-fed and stout. I've read that coyotes in this part of the state have interbred with wolves, and are thus thicker than the average skin-and-bones type that you usually see.

The other objects in the pic include a mineral block (dark block on ground), a timed feeder hanging from a tree, and a sewer pipe clean-out access (sticking out of ground to the left of the base of the tree).

We have been hearing them every so often at night, and it's really picked up in the last few weeks. Coyotes sound like a cross between a pack of hyenas and a basket full of puppies. We haven't heard any Hollywood-style howling, yet.

May 26, 2008. I was just out at the park running on one of the trails through the woods and a coyote crossed my path. He crossed, ran a bit, stopped and made sure that I was not any danger to him and then kept going. It was such a surprise! Although, I have to admit I was scared after that--couldn't keep my eyes on the trail. I was too busy looking for another one.

May 26, 2008. My husband and I just saw a beautiful grey coyote at Umstead Park. We were walking on Loblolly Trail, and heard a noise "walking" along side of us in the woods. We spotted the tail first...and then he turned and stared at us for a while. We had our 70 lb. German Shepard with us...and he looked to be about the same size. Beautiful, and very healthy looking.

June 28, 2008 My son just called from Raleigh saying he say a coyote in his subdivision, Hedingham near Knightdale. He was quite suprised as the animal just walked in the street near his house, crossed into his backyard, transversed the golf course and disappeared into the bushes. There is a lake with Canada geese near by, probably after babies and or eggs.
