Lecture touts city chickens

Bob Davis, a Raleigh chicken expert who I wrote about last year for my News & Observer article "Chicks in the City," is giving a lecture this Thursday, Feb. 1 at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum on "Chickens in the City Garden." Bob will discuss how living with chickens -- which he calls "flowers of the poultry world" -- helps urban dwellers nurture their connection to the earth. The lecture, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is free for arboretum members, ID-carrying N.C. State University students, and Department of Horticultural Science faculty and staff, and $5 for all others.

I've been wanting to keep some chickens in my back yard in North Raleigh but until finding this article, I had no idea that Raleigh was so permissive about it. I combed through the city code and couldn't find much of anything about it.

I recently arrived to North Carolina, and will be here for 4 weeks. I'm amazed with all those trees growing everywhere. Last weekend I went to Wiliam B. Umstead State Park, My fascination with the beauty of the trees, animals and creeks went to the floor when I read that sign in the bridge "... PCBs".. PCBs! cancer! come on!. I was stucked!. Later, I discovered in Google earth an enormous hole just next to the park and the beautiful forest ripped by two just for protecting... electricity lines?. I'm confused, in my country is very difficult to grow anything and creeks like in North Carolina are dreams for us. It should be completely sad if I wouldn't find this blog. Thanks Sue to be a voice in this environmentaly carefree land.

I didn't get to go to this lecture, but I did go on the Raleigh Henside the Beltline tour. Very neat, got to see a bunch of chicken coops in Raleigh. I had no idea that so many people in Raleigh raised chickens in their backyards.

I put some pictures up here in case anyone wants to see:

I had never heard of the tour until this year. Me and my girlfriend had a t-riffic time, learning about chickens and seeing the cool coops and backyards. It's crazy how many people in Raleigh raise chickens.
