N&O on Blogging
The News & Observer ran a package of stories about blogging in yesterday's Q section, and Raleigh Eco News was among the blogs mentioned.
The main story, by staff writer Eric Ferreri, offered expert perspectives on blogging and ethics. Anton Zuiker, who blogs at www.mistersugar.com, offered tips for high-quality blogging, while Ruby Sinreich, founder of the excellent OrangePolitics.org, discussed the symbiotic relationship between bloggers and traditional journalists. There's also a short piece offering advice for people interested in creating their own blog.
The package offered short profiles of four local blogs: Tire Shop by Raleigh artist and gallery owner Nancy Baker; Chris Anderson's Raleighing, about shopping and culture in the Capital City; my Raleigh Eco News; and Gary Kuebers' Endangered Durham, about history and development in that city.

Hi Sue -
I found the N&O "package" full of irony. Their "report" on blogging is testament to why this medium has taken off. Certainly not all blogs are political affairs. But only left-of-center blogs earn mention in the N&O. Meanwhile, one of the most trafficked blogs in our area, a right-of-center log by a local educator, merits not a word.
Reuben, I can understand how someone might categorize Raleigh Eco News as "left-of-center," given the right's general hostility toward environmental regulation. However, I'm scratching my head over that designation for the Tire Shop, Raleighing and Endangered Durham. Art, shopping and history are now considered "left-of-center"?
Raleighing is clearly apolitical. Tire Shop, a.k.a. "Militant Art Bitch" and Endangered Durham, perhaps debatable, but definitely left-of-center. I expect this from the N&O. Not from you.
Reuben, I read Nancy's blog the other day, and I have to say you're probably correct that it's left of center, given entries like:
The stream of toxic shit flowing from Washington is approaching critical mass. I'm beginning to feel gleeful. The meltdown is happening and if stupid Americans don't get it at the polls it will be evidence of an entrenched fascist state. The gerrymandering project of the republicans may be so far gone, that we might be waking up to a de facto coup d'etat.
Funny thing is, my dear old Republican mom talks that way, too. Just goes to show you how far to the right the "center" has moved.
You're still going to have to convince me that Endangered Durham is left of center, though.
